Professor Luis de Marcos Ortega receives “Friend of FOI” award

At the ceremonial session marking Faculty Day at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics (FOI) on December 18, 2025, Prof. Luis de Marcos Ortega, full professor at the University of Alcalá in Madrid, was awarded a special recognition – the “Friend of FOI” Award. The award was presented in gratitude for his outstanding contributions to international collaboration, scientific and teaching excellence, and the promotion of FOI in the global academic community.

Professor Ortega has collaborated continuously with FOI for over 15 years. This partnership began in 2010 during the eDiscovery intensive program in Amsterdam and has since developed into a strong, long-term collaboration encompassing joint research projects, supervision of doctoral dissertations (including dual PhD programs – cotutelle), numerous scientific publications, and extensive faculty and student mobility between the University of Zagreb and the University of Alcalá.

Thanks to his engagement, a dual PhD supervision agreement was signed in 2011, followed by an Erasmus student mobility agreement in 2013. Since then, more than ten FOI students have undertaken study stays at the University of Alcalá. Simultaneously, numerous faculty members and doctoral students from both universities have participated in study visits, semester exchanges, guest lectures, and joint workshops.

Professor Ortega has also been particularly active in collaboration with FOI’s international scientific conference, CECIIS (Central European Conference on Information and Intelligent Systems). Since 2019, he has served on the program and editorial boards, from 2021 as track co-chair for the Trends in Software Engineering section, and in 2023 as guest editor of the CECIIS proceedings. His contributions have significantly enhanced the international visibility and scientific quality of the conference.

Throughout his distinguished academic career, Professor Ortega has participated as a principal investigator or team member in numerous national and European projects, including the Horizon 2020 ProTego project, the EU Iceberg project, the RISE uDevOps project, and the current PARCHE project. He is the author of over 160 peer-reviewed scientific papers, with thousands of citations in relevant scientific databases.

By awarding the “Friend of FOI” recognition, the Faculty of Organization and Informatics expresses its gratitude to Prof. Luis de Marcos Ortega for his long-term, dedicated, and selfless collaboration, which has greatly contributed to the development of FOI’s international activities, scientific excellence, and global recognition, with the firm belief that this successful partnership will continue in the future.

Sincere congratulations!
