By adopting these Guidelines, FOI has provided a detailed framework for the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, building on the principles first emphasized in 2024, when the Faculty highlighted the importance of AI tools as support for learning, teaching, and scientific research — with clearly defined standards of academic integrity, legality, and transparency.
Levels of artificial intelligence use
The Guidelines introduce a clear model of levels of AI use in educational activities and precisely define the conditions and limitations for applying AI tools in classes and exercises, written examinations, as well as in seminar papers, final theses, and master’s theses.
The document also includes concrete examples of different levels of AI use across assignments in various courses, along with examples of permitted prompts when preparing final and master’s theses. This provides students and faculty with a clear and practical framework for distinguishing acceptable use from academically inappropriate practices.
Transparency and proper citation
The Guidelines place special emphasis on the obligation to transparently disclose the use of artificial intelligence. They provide detailed instructions on documenting the use of AI tools, including: stating the specific tool used in a paper, describing its use in the methods and methodology section, indicating its application in parts of the paper that include generated artifacts, referencing it in the bibliography, and including a statement of originality.
This approach ensures a clear distinction between the student’s original contribution and the support obtained through the use of technology.
Ethical and legal dimension
The Guidelines also encompass student education on the responsible use of AI, as well as the ethical and legal issues associated with such tools. The document addresses the code of ethics, privacy and confidential data protection, cybersecurity considerations, relevant legal frameworks and internal regulations, and procedures in cases of misuse.
