Guest lecture within the Time4Science project: Dr. Keith Quille i Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal

On Wednesday, 7 January 2026, the Faculty of Organization and Informatics hosted a lecture entitled “Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence”, held as part of the Faculty’s internal project Time 4 Science. The lecture at FOI was delivered by Dr. Keith Quille and Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal from Technological University Dublin, School of Enterprise Computing and Digital Transformation (ECDT).

The lecture focused on the principles and contemporary practices of Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI), with particular emphasis on the master’s programme Human-Centered AI and Machine Learning (HCAIM), funded by the European Union. The speakers highlighted that this study programme was designed in response to the growing need for AI systems that prioritize human values, transparency, and social responsibility.

During the lecture, key challenges of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) were discussed, including limitations in interpretability, the gap between technical explanations and users’ actual understanding, and the need to balance AI model performance with meaningful transparency. Special attention was given to the role of artificial intelligence in education at the European Union level, including an overview of current policies, strategic priorities, and the EU’s vision for the trustworthy, ethical, and inclusive use of AI in educational settings. In the final part of the lecture, practical examples of developing AI tools for education were presented, with an emphasis on co-creation with teachers and students and on designing solutions that enhance, rather than replace human teaching, including the example of the PreSS system.

The lecture was delivered by experts with extensive experience in artificial intelligence and education. Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal is a lecturer at Technological University Dublin and the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence master’s programme lead. His teaching and research focus on responsible and explainable AI, ethical compliance and the application of AI for sustainability and societal well-being. Dr. Keith Quille, a senior lecturer at the same University and a certified NVIDIA instructor for deep learning, focuses on the development of reliable AI models and research in education, particularly the use of AI to identify at-risk students and improve teaching and learning processes.

The lecture was organized by Assoc. Prof. Martina Tomičić Furjan, PhD, Vice-Dean for Research, Projects and International Cooperation and Assoc. Prof. Iva Gregurec, PhD.
