The main objective of the visit was to present the research and development activities of the Laboratory for Advanced Educational Technologies in the areas of artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics, while also exploring opportunities to transfer these experiences to UKM. As UKM plans to introduce humanoid robots into its teaching activities, members of the Laboratory delivered a lecture and hands-on workshop on the use of the NAO humanoid robot in education.
Participants were introduced to the robot's capabilities and, through practical exercises, designed and programmed teaching activities for various educational scenarios. As a follow-up to the collaboration, FOI and UKM agreed that FOI will develop a dedicated AI module enabling the humanoid robot to communicate in the Malay language, allowing its use in teaching at UKM to be better adapted to the local context.
During the visit, the delegation was also introduced to AIVA (AI Virtual Advisor), an intelligent virtual advisor developed by FOI as an extension to the Moodle learning management system, providing personalized support for students and teachers. Following the presentation, a hands-on workshop allowed the delegation to explore the system's capabilities, and UKM representatives expressed their interest in implementing AIVA at their university.
On the second day of the visit, the delegation visited the First Primary School Čakovec, where they observed examples of humanoid robots being used in classroom teaching and learned about the school's digital innovation initiatives.
The study visit, during which the delegation was hosted at FOI by Dean Full Prof. Marina Klačmer Čalopa and Laboratory Head Full Prof. Igor Balaban, together with the Laboratory members, further strengthened the collaboration between FOI and UKM and opened new opportunities for joint research and development in the fields of artificial intelligence, educational technologies, and humanoid robotics.
