Time 4 Science lecture by Professor Alta van der Merwe

We invite you to a lecture titled “From Research Ideas to Research Artefacts: Building Collaboration in Informatics and Design Science Research.” The lecture is part of the Faculty’s internal “Time 4 Science” project and will take place on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, from 12:00 AM, in Lecture Hall 10 (FOI1). The speaker will be Professor Alta van der Merwe, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria, and a long-standing friend of the Faculty of Organization and Informatics.

Abstract

This Time 4 Science lecture will introduce my current research interests in Informatics, with a focus on how Design Science Research supports the development of useful, rigorous, and transferable research artefacts. I will first reflect on my own research journey and the role of Informatics in addressing organisational, digital, and societal challenges. I will then highlight potential areas for collaboration between FOI and the Department of Informatics at the University of Pretoria, using selected staff research profiles to show possible points of connection. The final part of the lecture will focus on my recent work on Design Science Research artefacts, especially the classification of artefacts as foundational, composite, or higher-order contributions. This classification helps researchers, supervisors, and reviewers clarify what kind of contribution a study makes, how it should be evaluated, and how it supports the maturation of design knowledge. The session aims to open practical discussion on shared research interests, doctoral collaboration, joint publications, and future project opportunities.

Short biography

Professor Alta van der Merwe is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria. She is based in the Department of Informatics and has a strong research interest in Design Science Research, Enterprise Architecture, digital transformation, information systems, and the development of research artefacts. Her work focuses on the relationship between organisational needs, digital solutions, and rigorous academic contribution. She has supervised postgraduate students across Informatics-related topics and remains actively involved in building research capacity, strengthening doctoral research, and supporting collaboration across institutions.

The lecture will be held in English. Registration is open via the provided link until Monday, 15 June at 10:00.
