OpenCode.HR launched: Croatia’s collaborative platform for research and education

The OpenCode.HR platform for collaborative open-source software development in Croatia’s academic and scientific community has been launched. The platform provides a secure environment for developing, sharing, and adapting open-source projects, promoting transparency, openness, and knowledge exchange.

OpenCode.HR was initiated by the University Computing Centre of the University of Zagreb in collaboration with the UNIZG constituent units Faculty of Organization and Informatics and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, as well as the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computing, and Information Technology Osijek, and it operates on SRC infrastructure. The project team at FOI was led by Full Prof. Dr. Dragutin Kermek, with team members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zlatko Stapić and Asst. Prof. Dr. Matija Novak.

The platform is designed for students working on project, seminar, or final theses, researchers developing scientific software, educators sharing materials and examples, and teams collaborating on projects. Access is via AAI@EduHr or other verified authentication.

OpenCode.HR offers GitLab for code sharing, a Wiki for documentation, forums for knowledge exchange, visualization tools, collaborative writing and presentation tools, README editors, and a license selection system. It also includes educational resources such as manuals, interactive courses, and plans for live training, starting with the annual SRCE conference DEI 2026.

According to SRC Director Ivan Marić, the platform lays a strong foundation for long-term maintenance, standardization, and sharing of open-source software nationally, promoting open science, open education, and digital sovereignty.

Prof. Dr. Marina Klačmer Čalopa (Dean of FOI) emphasized that OpenCode.HR supports the FOI’s development strategy and encourages collaboration across teaching, research, and projects. Prof. Dr. Vedran Bilas (Dean of FER) highlighted that the platform fosters networks and centers of excellence around common research interests. Prof. Dr. Tomislav Matić (Dean of FERIT Osijek) noted it establishes the basis for efficient code exchange and joint projects, helping Croatian researchers fully utilize the available infrastructure.
